Faith Wallace shares her experience, gives guidance on supplements for stress and relaxation

Faith Wallace shares her experience, gives guidance on supplements for stress and relaxation

For most of her adult life, Faith Wallace carried stress like an invisible weight tucked somewhere beneath her ribs. She wasn’t outwardly anxious—at least, not in the ways people recognize.

She laughed easily, worked consistently, and carried herself with the soft calm of someone who seemed steady even when life was noisy. But inside, Faith lived with a nervous system that never quite learned how to settle. Her body absorbed every expectation, every unfinished task, every small worry, and stored them all as tension.

As the years passed, this hidden tension began to show itself quietly. Her shoulders stiffened during conversations even when nothing was wrong. Her breathing became shallow at night, especially when she tried to fall asleep. And her mind developed a habit of squeezing new worries into the empty spaces of the day, even on peaceful afternoons when she had no reason to be alert.

“Stress became my default setting,” Faith explained. “I wasn’t having panic attacks. I wasn’t melting down. I was just… always braced, even when I didn’t need to be.”

When the body stays in that state long enough, sleep becomes light, energy becomes inconsistent, and emotions take on a brittle quality. Faith didn’t realize how deeply stress had woven itself into her biology until she noticed how rarely she felt deeply relaxed. She could have days off, vacations, quiet mornings, but something inside her remained tightly wound.

Her healing began—slowly, almost reluctantly—when she admitted something simple but brave: she needed help supporting her nervous system, not just her schedule. That realization opened the door to learning about supplements for stress and relaxation. Yet instead of approaching them as quick fixes, she studied them deeply. She wanted to understand why they worked, how they worked, and how they interacted with the emotional patterns that shaped her stress.

What follows is Faith’s experience—told with honesty and grounded in research—along with her guidance for anyone considering supplements as part of their journey toward a calmer, more regulated inner life.

The moment she realized stress was living inside her

There wasn’t one dramatic event that pushed Faith toward change. Instead, it was a series of small realizations. She noticed that her jaw remained clenched long after conversations ended. She noticed that her mind raced in the quietest parts of the night. And she noticed something even more concerning: she could never fully relax, even when she had time to rest. Her body behaved as though it were still responding to something threatening, even when nothing was happening at all.

Her doctor described this state as “heightened sympathetic activation”—the nervous system’s habit of staying in fight-or-flight mode long after the moment of stress has passed. When this state becomes chronic, the body forgets how to downshift naturally. Cortisol cycles flatten or rise at the wrong time. Muscles maintain a low-level tension. The heart rate resists dropping into a peaceful rhythm. The mind interprets ordinary silence as incomplete tasks rather than stillness.

Faith began reading extensively about these patterns. One source that helped her tremendously was an article from Harvard Health Publishing explaining how long-term stress affects the nervous system and why relaxation isn’t always a matter of willpower. It gave her a scientific framework for the sensations she could never articulate. She saved it, reread it, and referenced it often during her journey.

That was the moment she stopped judging herself for not being able to “just calm down.” She realized that her body wasn’t resisting peace; it simply didn’t remember how to find it.

Her first step: rebuilding the foundation of calm

Before Faith even considered supplements, she focused on understanding how stress embedded itself inside her body. She learned that chronic tension is not just a psychological event—it is a chemical, hormonal, and neurological condition. The brain signals, the adrenal glands respond, the muscles tighten, the breath shortens, and a feedback loop forms. When the loop goes unbroken, it writes itself into the nervous system like muscle memory.

Supplements, she learned, are not designed to erase stress. They are meant to support the physiological processes that stress has depleted. They rebuild what chronic tension wears down: magnesium levels, neurotransmitter balance, cortisol cycles, and the body’s capacity to switch into rest-and-digest mode.

This understanding changed the way she approached supplementation. She didn’t want sedatives; she wanted allies—gentle agents that could help her nervous system relearn how to rest.

Magnesium: melting tension from the inside

Magnesium was the first supplement that truly changed something inside Faith. She had taken multivitamins before, but never a dedicated magnesium product. When her physician pointed out that magnesium plays a major role in muscle relaxation, nerve calming, and stress hormone regulation, she finally understood why her tension felt like it lived inside her bones.

Magnesium glycinate, in particular, became essential to her nightly rhythm. It did not make her sleepy; instead, it softened the body. Over several weeks, she felt her shoulders loosen more easily, her jaw unclench without force, and her breathing deepen spontaneously. The difference wasn’t dramatic—but it was foundational. It created the physical conditions where relaxation was possible, something she had not felt in years.

In retrospect, Faith realized that magnesium provided something she didn’t know she was missing: a sense of surrender within her muscles. It reminded her body that it was allowed to let go.

L-theanine: creating mental spaciousness

If magnesium helped her body release tension, L-theanine helped her mind find quiet. Faith described her thoughts not as chaotic, but as persistent. Even when she wasn’t worried about anything specific, she lived with a subtle hum of mental activity. L-theanine did not shut that down; instead, it softened the edges of her thoughts.

She compared the experience to dimming a room rather than turning off the light. Her thoughts were still present, but they no longer felt like they were demanding something from her. With this mental softening came a new feeling she hadn’t realized she missed: mental space. A sense that her mind had room to breathe.

With time, the effect of L-theanine became more than a momentary shift. It started shaping her evenings, making it easier for her to transition out of work mode and into the calmer internal posture necessary for restful nights. Faith often took it on evenings when she expected emotional residue—days filled with small irritations or unresolved conversations. It allowed her mind to return to center without forcing it into stillness.

Ashwagandha: supporting the hormonal rhythm of calm

Faith’s journey with ashwagandha was slower, more gradual, and ultimately one of the most transformative parts of her process. Unlike quick-acting supplements, ashwagandha works over weeks by supporting the body’s response to cortisol—the hormone that often becomes dysregulated when stress persists too long.

For Faith, stress didn’t manifest as panic. It manifested as a kind of internal acceleration, a feeling that she needed to be ready for something even when nothing was happening. Her cortisol timing reflected that: too high in the evening, not high enough in the morning. Ashwagandha didn’t sedate her. Instead, it reshaped the rhythm of her day. Even on nights when she didn’t sleep perfectly, she felt less reactive emotionally. She could respond to challenges without her body tightening in anticipation.

By the end of her third month using it consistently, she noticed that her evenings had a softness she had never experienced before. It was not lethargy—it was relief.

GABA and glycine: teaching the nervous system to release

Faith used GABA selectively, on nights when her body felt electrically charged. She described it as a quiet grounding, a sensation that allowed her to stop gripping the day. It didn’t create drowsiness; it created safety—the internal permission to relax that her body had forgotten how to give itself.

Glycine, on the other hand, became part of her nightly ritual. Its effect was subtle but unmistakable: it smoothed the transition between wakefulness and rest. Her breath deepened. Her heartbeat slowed sooner. And she no longer felt the nighttime spike of adrenaline that had haunted her for years.

These two supplements did not carry her into sleep, but they taught her nervous system how to step away from the threshold of alertness. That shift alone changed everything.

The emotional transformation that followed

As her stress levels decreased and her body began to experience deeper relaxation, Faith noticed that her emotional world softened as well. She felt less irritated by minor frustrations. Her mornings no longer carried the same heaviness. The space between her thoughts widened just enough for her to breathe through moments that used to overwhelm her.

Most importantly, she no longer lived with the constant readiness that had shaped her for so long. Her body finally remembered what peace felt like. Her gentle guidance for anyone beginning this journey

Faith is careful when giving advice. She emphasizes that supplements are tools—not cures. They support the internal mechanisms of relaxation, but they cannot replace emotional work, boundary-setting, or the quiet practices that teach the body how to soften again. Yet when chosen thoughtfully, supplements can become powerful allies for those whose stress has lived in their bodies for far too long.

“It wasn’t about stopping stress,” she says. “It was about restoring the parts of me that stress had drained.” And with time—patient, compassionate time—her body learned to rest again.
