Nina Bloom’s Mediterranean Breakfasts for Heart Health

Nina Bloom grew up in a household where breakfast was often a rushed affair—a quick pastry, maybe coffee, and out the door. “It wasn’t until my dad had a heart scare that I started to think differently about the first meal of the day,” she says.

As she explored heart-healthy diets, she kept returning to the Mediterranean approach. It wasn’t just the ingredients that appealed to her, but the rhythm of it—unhurried, thoughtful, and rich with flavor. “I loved the idea that breakfast could be both nourishing and grounding,” Nina says.

She began experimenting with Mediterranean-inspired breakfasts in her small city apartment, using ingredients that felt comforting and familiar: whole grains, olive oil, fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits. A slice of whole-grain toast with smashed avocado and chopped tomato. A bowl of Greek-style plant yogurt with figs and flaxseed.

Even a leftover vegetable stew from dinner, served warm in the morning, felt right.

What surprised her most was how good she felt after these meals—steady energy, no crashes, and a sense of fullness that lasted through the morning. “I wasn’t hungry two hours later. And my heart just felt… calmer,” she says.

She didn’t count calories. She didn’t measure fiber or fat. She just listened to her body—and trusted the wisdom of a way of eating that has stood the test of time.

“I think the real secret to Mediterranean breakfasts isn’t just what you eat,” she adds. “It’s how you eat it. Slowly, gratefully, and with care.”
