Tax Specialist Nadine Clarke Shares the Tax Planning Strategies Men Should Review Every Year

The most useful tax planning strategies are not one-time decisions. Income, tax laws, family circumstances, investments, and business activity can change from one year to the next. A strategy that worked previously may become less effective—or no longer be available—after a promotion, marriage, relocation, or property sale.

An annual tax review gives men and women between 25 and 65 an opportunity to estimate their liability, correct withholding, examine deductions, coordinate retirement contributions, and prepare for taxable transactions. It can also reveal when professional advice may cost less than an avoidable mistake.

This article provides general information for U.S. taxpayers. It does not promise a particular tax result or replace advice from a qualified CPA, enrolled agent, financial advisor, or tax attorney.

Tax Planning Strategies to Review Every Year

Update personal and household information

Tax Specialist Nadine Clarke Shares the Tax Planning Strategies Men Should Review Every Year

Begin with changes involving marriage, divorce, dependents, education, homeownership, retirement, or residency. These events may affect filing status, deductions, credits, withholding, and state filing obligations.

Beneficiary designations and estate documents should also be reviewed after major family changes. A will does not necessarily override the beneficiary listed on a retirement account or life insurance policy, so legal and financial documents should be coordinated.

Taxpayers who moved during the year should determine whether returns are required in more than one state. Remote work can create additional questions when the employee lives in one jurisdiction but works for an employer located in another.

Prepare a current-year income projection

Last year’s return is a useful starting point, but it should not be copied without adjustment. Estimate current wages, bonuses, commissions, interest, dividends, capital gains, rental income, retirement distributions, freelance revenue, and business profit.

A projection should also include a spouse’s income when filing jointly. Two employers may each withhold as though their job were the household’s only source of wages, which can create an unexpected shortfall.

Review the projection after a large bonus, investment sale, business distribution, or stock award. Tax planning is more effective while payments and transactions can still be adjusted.

Check federal and state withholding

Withholding should be reviewed at least once a year and after major income or family changes. Excessive withholding may reduce monthly cash flow, while insufficient withholding can produce a tax bill and possible penalties.

The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator helps eligible employees and pension recipients compare expected federal liability with current withholding. It can also provide information for updating Form W-4 or Form W-4P.

A large refund is not automatically a sign of successful planning. It generally means payments and refundable credits exceeded the final liability. Some taxpayers prefer that outcome, while others want more accurate withholding and higher take-home pay during the year.

Recalculate estimated tax payments

Self-employed individuals, investors, landlords, partners, and S corporation shareholders may receive income without adequate withholding. Federal taxes generally must be paid as income is earned rather than only when the annual return is filed.

Individuals commonly may need estimated payments when they expect to owe at least $1,000 at filing. The IRS estimated tax guidance explains Form 1040-ES, payment periods, and potential underpayment penalties.

Business owners with seasonal revenue may benefit from an annualized-income calculation. Higher-income taxpayers can also face different safe-harbor considerations. A quarterly professional projection may be appropriate when income is volatile.

Compare the standard deduction with itemizing

For tax year 2026, the federal standard deduction is $16,100 for single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $24,150 for heads of household. These amounts appear in the IRS 2026 inflation-adjustment guidance.

Potential itemized deductions may include qualifying mortgage interest, eligible charitable contributions, certain medical expenses, and applicable state and local taxes. Each category has limitations and documentation requirements.

Homeownership alone does not guarantee that itemizing will be more valuable. Tax software or a professional projection should calculate both approaches before recommending the timing of deductible expenses.

Review charitable giving plans

Charitable contributions should be supported by appropriate receipts and acknowledgments. Noncash gifts may require additional documentation, valuation, or appraisal, particularly when the property has substantial value.

Some households concentrate several years of planned donations into one tax year. This approach may make itemizing more valuable in the contribution year while allowing use of the standard deduction in another year.

Donor-advised funds can support this strategy, but contributions are generally irrevocable. Compare administrative fees, investment expenses, minimum contributions, approved charities, grant policies, and succession options before choosing a provider.

Revisit retirement contribution choices

Traditional retirement contributions may reduce current taxable income, while Roth contributions generally use after-tax money and may support qualified tax-free withdrawals. The appropriate balance can change as income and expected retirement tax rates evolve.

For 2026, the employee contribution limit for most 401(k), 403(b), governmental 457 plans, and the federal Thrift Savings Plan is $24,500. The general catch-up contribution limit for eligible participants age 50 or older is $8,000. Eligible participants ages 60 through 63 may qualify for an $11,250 catch-up limit.

The combined 2026 contribution limit for traditional and Roth IRAs is $7,500, or $8,600 for eligible taxpayers age 50 or older. Income and workplace-plan participation can affect Roth eligibility and traditional IRA deductions. Details are available in the IRS retirement plan announcement.

An annual retirement review should compare:

    • Traditional and Roth tax treatment
    • Employer matching and vesting requirements
    • IRA eligibility and contribution deadlines
    • Plan fees, investment choices, and expense ratios
    • Emergency savings and high-interest debt

Evaluate healthcare accounts and benefit elections

Eligible Health Savings Account contributions may be deductible for federal purposes, with tax-deferred growth and tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses. Eligibility generally requires qualifying high-deductible health plan coverage and satisfaction of other rules.

The 2026 HSA contribution limits are $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage, according to IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-19.

Compare health plan premiums, deductibles, provider networks, expected treatments, employer contributions, and out-of-pocket limits. Tax benefits should not outweigh the practical need for appropriate healthcare coverage.

Flexible spending arrangements may have different contribution, carryover, and use requirements. Employees should review balances and eligible expenses before plan deadlines.

Review capital gains, losses, and investment income

Investors should examine realized gains, unrealized losses, dividend distributions, interest, and concentrated positions before year-end. A large sale can affect estimated payments, state taxes, and potential exposure to the Net Investment Income Tax.

Tax-loss harvesting may allow selected capital losses to offset certain gains. However, wash-sale rules can affect a loss when substantially identical investments are purchased within the restricted period. Automatic reinvestment and transactions in other household accounts can complicate the analysis.

The IRS provides an overview of capital gain and loss treatment in Tax Topic 409. Taxes should not dictate every investment decision; diversification, risk, and long-term goals remain essential.

Examine business and rental property records

Business owners and landlords should reconcile accounts monthly rather than reconstructing an entire year during filing season. Financial records should separate revenue, operating expenses, loan proceeds, transfers, owner contributions, and personal withdrawals.

Review vehicle logs, equipment purchases, repairs, insurance, professional fees, payroll, contractor payments, and home-office documentation. Expenses must satisfy applicable rules and be supported by reliable records.

Entity structure should also be reviewed as profit grows. An LLC or S corporation election does not automatically reduce taxes. Payroll costs, state fees, bookkeeping, retirement plans, insurance, and legal requirements can change the economic result.

Secure records and monitor the IRS account

Tax documents contain information that can facilitate identity theft. Use encrypted storage and secure provider portals rather than sending unprotected files through ordinary email.

An IRS Online Account can help taxpayers review certain balances, payments, transcripts, and notices. Compare the payment history with personal records to confirm that estimated payments were applied to the correct year.

Best Tax Planning Options in 2026: Costs, Pricing and Services

DIY tax software

Tax software may be appropriate for employees with organized documents, limited investment activity, and no complicated business or multi-state issues. Pricing can range from free to more than $250, depending on forms, state returns, and professional support.

The advantages include lower cost, guided questions, document imports, and electronic filing. The disadvantages are limited strategy and the possibility of entering technically complex information incorrectly.

Live-assisted preparation programs

Some software providers offer professional review, live assistance, or complete remote preparation. This can provide more support than DIY filing without the cost of an ongoing advisory relationship.

Confirm whether the service includes proactive planning or only return preparation. State filing, amended returns, notice assistance, and investment forms may require additional fees.

Enrolled agent services

An enrolled agent is federally authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS. This can be a suitable option for self-employment income, investment reporting, estimated payments, notices, amended returns, and tax resolution services.

Fees may begin in the hundreds of dollars and reach several thousand for complex preparation, planning, or representation. Ask whether pricing is hourly, flat-rate, or based on required forms.

CPA tax planning services

A tax-focused CPA may be appropriate for business owners, executives, investors, and landlords. Services can include preparation, bookkeeping review, financial statements, payroll coordination, and year-round projections.

Personal tax engagements may cost several hundred to $5,000 or more. Ongoing business accounting and advisory services can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per month, depending on transaction volume and scope.

Financial advisors and tax attorneys

A financial advisor may coordinate investments, retirement accounts, insurance, charitable giving, and estate goals. Fees may be hourly, subscription-based, flat-rate, or calculated as a percentage of managed assets.

A tax attorney is generally appropriate for legal disputes, major transactions, international issues, sophisticated estate structures, or potential legal exposure. Services are commonly billed at professional hourly rates.

Cost and pricing breakdown

    • DIY tax software: approximately $0–$250 or more
    • Live-assisted preparation: potentially several hundred dollars
    • EA or CPA services: several hundred to $5,000 or more
    • Financial advisor: hourly, flat-fee, subscription, or asset-based pricing
    • Tax attorney: generally billed hourly

These are general estimates rather than guaranteed quotes. Location, state filings, investment activity, business ownership, record quality, and representation needs can materially affect total fees.

Which Annual Tax Planning Option Is Right for You?

Match the provider to your financial complexity

DIY software may be sufficient for a taxpayer with wages, bank interest, and a simple return. An enrolled agent or CPA becomes more valuable when there is business income, rental property, equity compensation, cryptocurrency, multi-state filing, or substantial investment activity.

A financial advisor can help coordinate investments and long-term goals, while a tax attorney handles legal matters. Households using multiple professionals should clearly identify who is responsible for tax projections, investment decisions, legal documents, and return preparation.

Before hiring a provider, ask:

  • Do you provide year-round planning or only prepare returns?
  • Have you handled taxpayers with similar income and assets?
  • Which federal and state services are included in the fee?
  • Will you respond if a tax notice arrives?
  • How are financial documents protected?

Frequently Asked Questions

When should an annual tax review take place?

Conduct an initial review early in the year, a midyear update, and another review before year-end. Additional reviews may be appropriate after major financial or family changes.

Is annual tax planning only useful for high earners?

No. Withholding, retirement contributions, healthcare accounts, credits, investment records, and estimated payments can be relevant across many income levels.

Can tax planning guarantee a larger refund?

No. A refund depends on liability, payments, withholding, and refundable credits. Good planning aims for accuracy and informed decisions rather than the largest possible refund.

Should I use a CPA or an enrolled agent?

Either may offer strong tax services. A CPA may be preferable when accounting and financial reporting are central, while an enrolled agent may provide focused federal tax expertise and representation.

How long should tax records be retained?

Retention periods depend on the document and circumstances. Property basis, business, and investment records may need to be kept longer than ordinary supporting documents. Follow current IRS guidance and professional advice.

Conclusion

The strongest tax planning strategies are reviewed regularly rather than repeated automatically. Every year, taxpayers should reconsider income projections, withholding, estimated payments, deductions, retirement accounts, investments, healthcare benefits, and business records.

When complexity increases, compare tax software, live assistance, enrolled agents, CPAs, financial advisors, and attorneys by expertise, total fees, security, and service scope. Annual planning cannot guarantee a lower tax bill, but it can reduce surprises, improve cash flow, and support more informed financial decisions.
