CPA Monica Ashby Reveals the Tax Planning Strategies That Can Help Men Keep More Income

The most effective tax planning strategies do more than reduce a bill at filing time. They help workers, investors, and business owners organize income, deductions, retirement savings, and tax payments before important deadlines pass. For men and women between 25 and 65, thoughtful planning can preserve more after-tax income without relying on aggressive deductions or questionable loopholes.

The essential distinction is timing. Tax preparation records decisions that have already been made, while tax planning evaluates decisions before they become permanent. That could mean adjusting paycheck withholding, changing the timing of a deductible expense, increasing a retirement contribution, or preparing for the tax consequences of selling an investment.

This article provides general information for U.S. taxpayers. Eligibility rules, state taxes, and personal circumstances differ, so major decisions should be reviewed with a qualified CPA, enrolled agent, financial advisor, or tax attorney.

Tax Planning Strategies That Can Protect More of Your Income

Build a tax projection before making financial moves

A tax projection estimates income, adjustments, deductions, credits, withholding, and payments for the current year. Unlike last year’s return, it can reflect a new job, a bonus, freelance revenue, investment gains, retirement distributions, or a property sale.

This calculation helps answer practical questions. Will an additional retirement contribution reduce taxable income? Could selling an investment create a large capital gain? Is enough money being withheld from a bonus? Would exercising stock options affect estimated taxes?

Federal tax brackets are marginal, which means moving into a higher bracket does not cause every dollar of income to be taxed at the higher rate. However, additional income can affect deductions, credits, Medicare-related costs, and other income-based provisions. Good tax planning considers these interactions rather than focusing on a single bracket.

Correct paycheck withholding before year-end

Workers frequently treat their tax refund as evidence that their return was prepared correctly. A refund simply means payments and refundable credits exceeded the final tax liability. If withholding was unnecessarily high, the household gave up access to part of its cash flow during the year.

The free IRS Tax Withholding Estimator helps eligible employees and pension recipients estimate federal withholding. It may be useful after marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, a second job, a large bonus, or a substantial change in household income.

Reducing excessive withholding can increase take-home pay, but adjustments should be based on a reasonable projection. Cutting withholding without calculating the expected liability may produce a tax bill or underpayment penalty.

Plan estimated payments for freelance and investment income

Federal income taxes operate on a pay-as-you-go basis. Contractors, online sellers, consultants, landlords, investors, and business owners may need to pay taxes throughout the year because their income is not fully covered by employer withholding.

Individuals generally may need estimated payments when they expect to owe at least $1,000 at filing. The IRS explains current requirements, payment methods, and potential safe-harbor rules on its estimated taxes page.

A separate savings account can help prevent quarterly payments from competing with ordinary spending. Some business owners transfer a percentage of each payment they receive into this account. The appropriate percentage depends on federal income tax, self-employment tax, state obligations, deductions, and other household income.

Use retirement contributions strategically

Workplace retirement plans can be valuable tax-planning tools, particularly when an employer offers matching contributions. Traditional contributions may reduce current taxable income, while Roth contributions are generally made with after-tax money and may support qualified tax-free withdrawals later.

For 2026, employees can generally contribute up to $24,500 to a 401(k), 403(b), governmental 457 plan, or the federal Thrift Savings Plan. The general catch-up contribution limit for eligible participants age 50 or older is $8,000. Eligible participants ages 60 through 63 may have an $11,250 catch-up limit.

The combined 2026 contribution limit for traditional and Roth IRAs is $7,500, or $8,600 for eligible taxpayers age 50 or older. Deductibility and Roth eligibility can depend on income, filing status, and workplace-plan coverage. Updated limits are available from the IRS retirement plan announcement.

Before choosing traditional versus Roth contributions, compare:

    • Your current marginal tax rate and reasonable expectations for retirement
    • Employer matching rules, investment expenses, and vesting schedules
    • Eligibility limits and the availability of deductions
    • Cash-flow needs, emergency reserves, and existing debt

A contribution should not be increased solely for a tax benefit if doing so creates high-interest debt or leaves the household unable to cover emergencies.

Compare the standard deduction with itemized deductions

For tax year 2026, the standard deduction is $16,100 for single taxpayers and married people filing separately, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $24,150 for heads of household. The figures are included in the IRS 2026 inflation adjustments.

Taxpayers should compare the standard deduction with eligible itemized deductions rather than assuming one method is better. Potential itemized deductions may include qualifying mortgage interest, charitable contributions, eligible medical expenses, and certain state and local taxes, subject to current limitations.

Some households consider concentrating planned charitable contributions into one year instead of spreading them evenly. This may make itemizing more valuable in the contribution year. Donor-advised funds can support this approach, although provider fees, investment costs, minimum contributions, and the irrevocable nature of gifts should be reviewed carefully.

Coordinate an HSA with healthcare needs

Eligible taxpayers covered by a qualifying high-deductible health plan may use a Health Savings Account. At the federal level, eligible contributions may be deductible, earnings can grow tax-deferred, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses can be tax-free.

The 2026 HSA contribution limit is $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage. Eligibility depends on insurance coverage and other factors. The official amounts appear in IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-19.

Tax benefits should not be evaluated separately from healthcare costs. Compare insurance premiums, deductibles, expected medical expenses, out-of-pocket limits, employer contributions, and HSA provider fees. A lower-premium health plan is not always the least expensive option for a family expecting frequent care.

Review investment taxes before selling

Investors should estimate unrealized gains and losses before placing year-end trades. Selling appreciated assets may create capital gains, while realizing selected losses may offset certain gains. Unused net capital losses may also receive limited treatment against ordinary income, with possible carryforwards under applicable rules.

Tax-loss harvesting requires care because wash-sale rules can affect losses when substantially identical investments are purchased within the restricted period. Accounts owned by a spouse or transactions in other investment accounts may complicate the analysis.

Investment quality still matters more than a short-term deduction. Selling a suitable asset solely for tax reasons may damage long-term performance. Advisory programs offering automated tax-loss harvesting should be compared by annual fees, investment methodology, account minimums, trading practices, and coordination with outside accounts.

Best Tax Planning Options in 2026: Services, Costs and Provider Comparison

Tax software for straightforward returns

DIY software may be appropriate for employees with organized records, limited investment transactions, and no complicated business or multi-state issues. Depending on forms, support, and state returns, pricing can range from free filing programs to more than $200.

The main advantages are convenience, guided data entry, and lower cost. The limitations include minimal personalized planning and the risk of misunderstanding software questions. Compare total checkout pricing, state filing fees, live-support charges, data-import features, security measures, and audit-assistance terms.

Enrolled agents for tax-focused help

Enrolled agents are federally authorized tax professionals who can represent taxpayers before the IRS. Their services can be suitable for personal returns, self-employment income, IRS notices, amended returns, estimated tax planning, and tax resolution matters.

A relatively uncomplicated return may cost several hundred dollars. Complex preparation, planning, or representation may cost $1,000 to several thousand dollars. Ask whether fees are flat, hourly, or based on the number of forms, and whether the quote includes state returns and post-filing support.

CPAs for business and financial coordination

A tax-focused CPA may be the best option for business owners, executives, landlords, high-income households, and investors with complicated transactions. CPA services can combine return preparation with bookkeeping, payroll coordination, entity planning, and periodic tax projections.

Fees commonly begin in the hundreds of dollars for personal preparation and can reach several thousand for complex returns or ongoing advice. Monthly business accounting and tax packages may range from a few hundred dollars to $1,500 or more, depending on payroll, transaction volume, reporting, and advisory access.

Not every CPA specializes in taxation. Prospective clients should ask how much of the firm’s work involves situations similar to theirs and who will actually prepare and review the return.

Tax attorneys for legal complexity

Tax attorneys are generally appropriate when the problem involves legal interpretation, a business acquisition, a major estate, international reporting, litigation, or potential civil or criminal exposure. Their hourly rates can be substantially higher than standard preparation fees.

The advantage is specialized legal analysis and, where applicable, attorney-client privilege. The disadvantage is cost. Hiring a tax attorney for a routine wage-based return is usually unnecessary when tax software, an enrolled agent, or a CPA can handle the work.

Cost and pricing breakdown

Prices vary by location, credentials, complexity, and record quality. The following ranges are general estimates rather than quotes:

    • Tax software: approximately $0–$250 or more, including possible state and support charges
    • EA or CPA preparation: several hundred dollars for simpler work and $1,000–$5,000 or more for complex returns and planning
    • Tax attorney: commonly billed at hourly professional rates that may reach several hundred dollars or more
    • Ongoing business tax services: approximately $200–$1,500 or more per month, depending on scope

Cheap preparation can become expensive when it omits planning, creates errors, or provides no help with a notice. At the same time, premium fees are not proof of superior service. Request a written engagement letter explaining deliverables, deadlines, extra charges, document security, and representation policies.

Taxpayer credentials can be researched through the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers. Reviews can reveal communication patterns, but credentials, relevant experience, and transparent pricing deserve more weight than isolated star ratings.

Which Tax Planning Option Is Right for You?

Match the provider to the financial problem

Tax software may be enough for a taxpayer with wages, ordinary bank interest, and a simple return. An enrolled agent or CPA may provide greater value when there is freelance income, rental property, a business entity, substantial investments, equity compensation, or filing obligations in multiple states.

A coordinated team may be justified when tax decisions overlap with investment management, estate planning, insurance, and business succession. In that situation, clarify who is responsible for each recommendation. Financial advisors and attorneys do not automatically prepare tax returns, and tax preparers do not necessarily provide investment or legal advice.

Before hiring a provider, ask these questions:

    • Do you provide proactive tax projections or only prepare returns?
    • Have you handled taxpayers with similar income and transactions?
    • Which services and forms are included in the quoted fee?
    • How are tax documents and personal information protected?
    • Will you assist if a federal or state tax notice arrives?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can tax planning guarantee that I will owe less?

No. Tax planning cannot guarantee a lower bill because results depend on income, eligibility, transactions, tax-law changes, and personal circumstances. Its purpose is to identify lawful choices, improve timing, and prevent avoidable surprises.

How often should I review my tax plan?

Most households should review it at least annually and after major life or income changes. Business owners, contractors, and active investors may benefit from quarterly projections because their income and deductions can fluctuate considerably.

Is a large refund always a good result?

Not necessarily. A large refund may indicate that too much tax was withheld during the year. Some people prefer that outcome, but others may benefit from accurate withholding and higher take-home pay throughout the year.

Are tax-planning fees worth paying?

They may be worthwhile when potential savings, error prevention, and time saved exceed the professional fee. Request a clear service scope and evaluate the provider’s experience with your specific situation before deciding.

Should I hire a CPA or an enrolled agent?

Either may be appropriate for tax preparation and IRS representation. A tax-focused CPA can be valuable when accounting and business reporting are involved, while an enrolled agent may offer highly focused federal tax expertise. Relevant experience matters more than the credential alone.
