Uma Clark’s Guide to Sustainable and Healthy Grocery Shopping

Particularly when you’re trying to make decisions that benefit the earth as well as your health, navigating the aisles in a grocery shop may be taxing. Passionate advocate of sustainable living, Uma Clark offers her best advice on how to buy greener and wiser.

1. Plan Your Meals & Make a List “Planning is the secret to avoiding food waste,” Uma notes. “I usually map out my meals for the week in a few minutes before leaving to the store.” She advises creating a shopping list grounded in your current home contents. This guarantees you buy just what you need and helps you avoid needless purchases.

2. Select local, seasonal produce. Selecting seasonal fruits and vegetables is among the simplest approaches to buy sustainably. “Not only do they taste better, but they also have a less impact on the surroundings,” Uma says. Finding local produce is easy at farmers’ markets, which also help small-scale growers.

3. Bring Containers and Bags of Your Own. Environmental contamination is mostly caused by single-use plastic. Uma advises packing containers for bulk goods and even reusable grocery bags. “Many stores now have bulk areas where you might purchase grains, nuts, and spices without the extra packaging,” she says.

4. Exercises careful reading of labels. Not always is something labelled “organic” or “natural” the healthiest option. Uma counsels seeking for whole, unprocessed foods and consulting ingredient listings. ” Usually I put an ingredient I can’t pronounce back on the shelf,” she says.

5. Cut Packaged & Processed Foods. Many times, packaged goods have extra plastic and pointless chemicals. Uma advises, whenever at all feasible, cooking from scratch. “Homemade meals are healthier, more delicious, and save money in the long run,” she notes.

6. Back environmentally friendly, ethical businesses. “If a company is open on where and how they source their ingredients, that’s a good sign,” Uma says. Search for companies with green projects, sustainable fishing labels, and fair-trade certifications.

“Sustainable grocery shopping is a journey, not a one-time change,” Uma advises. “Start small, make slow progress, and before you know it these behaviours will become second nature.” One supermarket trip at a time, by choosing wisely we can preserve the earth as well as our health.
