Keira Vaughn’s Top Anti-Inflammatory Herbs & Spices

Keira Vaughn has always found great fascination in the ability of food. Having battled autoimmune problems for years, she was resolved to find natural therapies to help lower her body’s inflammation. She found over time that herbs and spices were among the most powerful weapons in combat against chronic inflammation, not only taste enhancers.

Keira loves turmeric among other things. “I first came upon turmeric when I started doing yoga,” she says. Ayurvedic medicine makes use of this spice, which has long-standing anti-inflammatory action. The key ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, has been demonstrated in several studies to lower body inflammation and ease symptoms of disorders like arthritis.

Another essential for Keira is ginger. She stirs it into stews, smoothies, even tea. “Ginger naturally has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities that help calm the gut and lower joint inflammation,” she says. For Keira, a daily cup of ginger tea has evolved into a calming routine particularly following meals.

Another spice Keira has included into her diet is cinnamon. “Not only does cinnamon add warmth and flavor, but it also has anti-inflammatory compounds that help stabilize blood sugar levels and cut body inflammation.” She puts it on porridge, tosses it into smoothies, and even calls for it in savory foods.

Keira also swore by garlic. “Garlic is a naturally occurring antibiotic and anti-inflammatory,” she notes. “I nearly always use it—sautéed veggies, soups, even salad dressings.” Garlic has been found in studies to help lower inflammation and maybe strengthen the immune system.

Cayenne pepper is the last spice Keira suggests. “Cayenne includes capsaicin, which helps improve circulation and lower pain and inflammation,” she says. For a little kick and health boost, she enjoys sprinkling cayenne on her food.

Keira feels enabled to control her inflammation organically with these herbs and spices. She adds, “Food is medicine.” “I have discovered a way to nourish my body and lower inflammation without depending on medication by including these basic ingredients.”
